Twr Maur

from £60.00

Image size: 6×8cm

Twr Maur is a lighthouse on Llanddwyn Island on Anglesey overlooking the Menai Straits, somewhere I like to visit every year. As a child it used to be a big adventure involving a long sandy walk through the forest across the beach and finally to the island when the tide was out. The end result was picnic and a hunt for cowrie shells. Now it is a conservation area with a big carpark, but it is still accessible and a joy to visit.

This etching was selected, but not hung for the RA Summer Show 2019, it was also selected for an exhibition in the The Sea and Lighthouses International Mini Print Exhibition in Cantabria, Spain and is part of their 2019 collection.
I used white ground, which involves using soap flakes and talc mixed to a paste, which is painted onto the aquatinted plate. The white ground stops the acid from biting the plate. The beauty of this technique being the result is always a surprise.
